Early Years Foundation Stage
Nursery and Reception at Ravenswood is where children begin their journey towards Preparing for Take Off – Destination: Success. The two EYFS curriculum years focus on building the secure foundations children need to thrive: strong communication, early social development, emotional regulation and the confidence to explore learning independently. Through high‑quality play and interaction, pupils learn what it means to Be Kind, Be Bold, Be Brave and Be You, developing the prime areas of learning in line with the EYFS framework. By the end of Reception, children are ready for the more structured learning of Key Stage 1, grounded in curiosity, confidence and a sense of belonging.
EYFS Progression of Skills document
Year 1
Year 1 supports children through the crucial transition from play‑based learning to more formal instruction, ensuring they feel safe, confident and ready to take bold steps forward. The focus is on securing early reading through systematic synthetic phonics, developing handwriting fluency and strengthening number sense. Pupils learn to follow routines, work with increasing independence and show kindness and courage as they adapt to new expectations. The year aims to ensure all children move towards age‑related expectations while continuing to grow as Ravenswood learners who are preparing for take off.
Year 2
Year 2 consolidates the core knowledge and habits established in Year 1, preparing pupils for the transition into Key Stage 2. Children become confident, fluent readers, develop early paragraphing and secure key mathematical concepts including number bonds, place value and the four operations. Personally, pupils learn to take responsibility, respond to feedback and show bravery when tackling new challenges. The year strengthens their understanding of what it means to Be You — proud of their progress and ready for the next stage. By the end of Year 2, pupils demonstrate the skills set out in the Key Stage 1 programmes of study.
Year 3
Year 3 marks the start of Key Stage 2 and widens pupils’ horizons as they continue their journey towards Destination: Success. Children deepen their reading comprehension, write with greater control and purpose, and strengthen their mathematical fluency, particularly in multiplication and problem‑solving. They learn to navigate more complex friendships, collaborate effectively and show kindness and bravery in new situations. The year ensures pupils are confidently accessing the broader KS2 curriculum while developing the independence and self‑belief that define Ravenswood learners.
Year 4
Year 4 is about increasing fluency, accuracy and independence across the curriculum. Pupils refine their reading comprehension, develop more sophisticated writing structures and secure key mathematical knowledge, including multiplication facts and efficient calculation strategies. Personally, they learn to take ownership of their learning, show resilience when challenged and demonstrate what it means to Be Bold in their thinking. The year prepares pupils for upper Key Stage 2 by ensuring they meet the expectations of the lower KS2 National Curriculum and can apply their knowledge confidently and creatively.
Year 5
Year 5 deepens subject knowledge, strengthens higher‑order thinking and prepares pupils for the academic and personal demands of Year 6. Children analyse texts, write with increasing sophistication and apply mathematical reasoning to multi‑step problems. They develop maturity, leadership and emotional regulation, showing kindness and courage as role models for younger pupils. The year ensures pupils are confidently meeting upper KS2 expectations and are well on their way to being ready for take off as they approach their final year at Ravenswood.
Year 6
Year 6 is about readiness – academically, socially and emotionally – for secondary school and the wider world. Pupils refine their reading, writing and mathematical fluency to meet the standards of the end‑of‑KS2 assessments while developing independence, resilience and self‑management. They take on leadership roles, contribute to the school community and show what it truly means to Be Kind, Be Bold, Be Brave, Be You. By the end of Year 6, pupils leave Ravenswood confident, grounded in strong values and fully prepared for take off towards Destination: Success.
